Head Coach

Carey Mankins

Coach Carey began her rowing career her freshman year at Grand Valley State University. While rowing at GVSU, Carey stroked the Women’s V8 and took gold at ACRA, MACRA and the Dad Vail regatta her senior year. Carey was privileged as a member of the 1st Team All-American athlete at the ACRA National Championship her sophomore, junior and senior year and had the opportunity to race and place second against Oxford University at the Henley Women’s Regatta in England her senior year. She was captain of the women’s team her junior year and senior year. She graduated from Grand Valley in 2014 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Allied Health Science. 2017 is her second season coaching and she is excited to be working with Huskies in Boats!

Kelly Fields

Coach Kelly got her start in rowing at Rockford High School where she rowed on the varsity team for three years.  She received athletic and academic scholarships to Indiana University where she rowed for four years.  While at Indiana University, Coach Kelly was honored as an All Big Ten Second Team athlete in 2003 and as a National Scholar Athlete in 2004 and 2005.  Coach Kelly began coaching in 2002 at Grand Rapids Rowing Association where she served as an assistant coach for a year and as head coach and summer program director for four years.  This is her sixth year coaching at Forest Hills Northern.  Coach Kelly has her Level II Coaching Certification.

Chris Smith

Coach Chris has helped coach at Forest Hills Northern for the past four years. He attended Forest Hills Northern and graduated in 2007. Coach Chris also was a four year rower and two time captain during his years of rowing at the high school level. Coach received his bachelors degree from Grand Valley State University in 2014

Sarah Kovacs

Sarah sat in the 1st Varsity 8 all three years she rowed at MSU. She was captain for 2 of the three years. She started rowing her Jr. year and stayed an extra year almost strictly for rowing. Sarah was First Team All Big Ten in 2015.  Sarah participated in Athletes in Action and has two degrees, one in psychology and an interdisciplinary studies degree.  For this second degree, Sara took multiple coaching courses and primarily rowed.  She has taken the Level II Coach training.

Kimi Lakanen

Kimi rowed for Forest Hills Northern back in the day.  Kimi studied construction management at MSU and coached in her fifth year.  Throughout her rowing seasons at MSU, Kimi consistently rowed on winning crews.

Emma Green

Emma studied packaging at MSU.  There she gained experience racing in nearly every boat as a port and starboard contributing to team finishes.  Her crews have been nationally ranked.  She has taken the Level II Coach training.
